With the majority of my clientele being of the male population, I have come up with a tried and true formula for a kick ass masculine space-minus the violence of course! Incorporate these fundamental furnishings and any man is sure to love his décor.
1. Mature color palette – Most guys love blue, injecting a space with a sophisticated version is how I like to impress them. I lean towards navy, indigo and midnight shades. A surprising request I continually get is for the color purple. I up the edge by using rich aubergine tones, aka eggplant. Combining these with various shades of grey give a space energy without feeling macho and a calmness throughout.
2. Metal – I love mixing mediums and metal is the way to go for masculine spaces. Whether it’s a subtle touch in the hardware or incorporating full force like a trunk style table or industrial light fixture. The rawness of this material brings out the inner metalworker in any man!
3. Luxe fabrics and textiles – One of the secrets to design is balance. What better way to incorporate the more feminine qualities than in the fabrics that surround his space? Think plush upholstered walls that serve as headboards too, high thread count sheets, luxurious fur throws, shag and flokati area rugs… do you feel the softness!?
4, Ultra cool accent chair – From a worn in leather club chair to a classic wingback covered in luxurious velvet, he will feel like he’s the King of the castle when he sits in this chair. This accent piece will serve as more than just a conversational starter, it’s a great place to unwind after a long day too.
5. At least one techy object, and no more than a few – Let’s face it, guys love their toys! This is where I love to get personal with my clients-what makes them tick? Is it a transparent tv or the latest DJI drone? If you can’t simply incorporate his dream item into the décor or as a functioning element of the space, showcase the gadget as an art piece. Gallery framed black and white photos are always a classic touch when the item is too large to feature.
