As designers, we are always looking to get a jump start on applying future trends to our work to keep things fresh and exciting. It’s our job, as designers, to know what trends will stay timeless for our clients and transform their space into a place they can enjoy now and in the future.
Design is constantly evolving! Spoiler alert: we want to share a few ways we see the design world changing and how you can use this to your advantage! What will be considered dated and need to go? What is fresh and will be a new must have in any space? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!
It should be no surprise when we say that the formal living rooms will be taking their final curtain call very soon. Families now gather in media rooms and kitchens to relax, catch up and eat together. Even during formal gatherings, people like to be in a space that is more comfortable and welcoming- rather than pristine and, quite frankly, without a television or sound system. We suggest switching these rooms out for an office (like our team’s office remodel in Rio Secco, shown above), or a media room. A space that someone will use often rather than on special occasion is what will be desired.
White and grays have booked their flights out of here, it is all about the rich colors. Be it pastel walls and bright neon signs for accents (YOLO, so make it fun and fresh right?), matte black walls and velvets (ok, that emerald green chair is to die for!), or fun wallpaper with metallic accents (this bedroom remodel by Lisa Escobar Design is rocking this future trend!)…color is in. So get out your paint brushes, and get ready to liven up your spaces!
Materials to look out for? Acrylics are coming into play now, and they are so fabulous! We see the acrylic trend sticking around well into the future. Keep an eye out for this unique material on the base of chairs, tables and lamps, art frames or the backs of neon signs. Next? Metals. The industrial look with dark iron fixtures is a bold addition to any room. Meanwhile, brass is working its way back into interiors as well. We are seeing a lot of hardware, fixtures and furniture accents, giving us pops of this roaring 20s metal for a luxurious look.
Maximalism. The comeback of art, texture and color in a BIG way. Art will be taking over the walls, which will also be covered in large print wallpaper! More pillows and blankets of different textures and colors will be added to seating areas for a pop of fun, and accent rugs will be layered. And with all of this, we believe you’ll see more upholstered furniture pieces or pieces made from metal, all of which will be in more of an architectural, fluid form. The standard wood dining chair will be replaced with a unique piece designed with fluidity, making each an accent of their own.
Will the future be more relaxing? Judging by the increase in spa styled bathrooms, we think yes! People will be pay more attention to their bathrooms’ style. This will no longer be a room just for a toilet and sink. This is a place where wall coverings, accent rugs, unique fixtures and spa showers will live. And it is so simple! For example, change out drawer hardware for sleek, metallic pieces. Raincan shower heads are just as easy to obtain as a standard shower head and so much more futuristic, so go for it! Backlit mirrors are great for makeup, floating vanities make the space feel more open, and classy metallic accents can really bring the space’s relaxing feel all together. Make your own piece of paradise in one of the smallest rooms of your house!
The future is looking good, what can we say! And we love designing for it.
