Apartment living often means squishing all of your stuff into 800 square feet. While we have tips and tricks for making any space grandeur, these tips are for your smallest spaces that we recently presented to the residents at Elysian West– a luxury apartment complex in Las Vegas.
Whether you’re living the dream in your small one bedroom apartment or trying to decorate a small nook in your mansion on a budget- these tips will help!
Design is all about layering-textures, colors, patterns, and materials. This can be done with the use of wallpaper, adding throw pillows and blankets to your sofa, or selecting a rug with some shag or colorful patterns.
Test paint colors with lights on and off and at different times — morning, midday and night. Lighting, both natural and artificial, will affect how color appears on walls and against furniture. Painting small spaces with brighter or lighter colors will add variation and expansiveness; dark colors, and black, make spaces feel smaller.
Take your time accumulating accessories. Pick souvenirs up such as vases, picture frames, or books while traveling or visiting boutiques. Building the collection that gives each space character will take months or years. As you collect, curate — too many small accessories can become clutter rather than points of interest.
Take a look at your current rugs- in a dining room, you should be able to pull all of your chairs out from underneath the table and have chair legs still be on the rug. Add about 24 inches onto the side of each table to gauge optimal rug size.
Finish off your space with window dressings. Draperies hung a few inches from the ceiling and “kissing” the floor will make your windows appear larger and make a room feel more spacious.
Most importantly, don’t let other people’s opinions dictate your space. But remember, variety adds vitality — too much of any one color can become overwhelming and monotonous.
