Meet Dimitry Berg, Founder of BananaDog Media, our go-to creative agency! Located right here in Las Vegas, this award winning company has a passion for digital marketing and viral branding. From creating the ultimate logo, print ads and business cards, to video capture & editing, they offer so many different services! We love everything BDM has created with us, here at APJ (including our logo!) and we’re so excited to share them with you!
Your logo really stands out, can you tell us because we’re dying to know.. what exactly is a banana dog?
Funny story. I was traveling to Cabo with my girlfriend and her friends. Upon arrival to Cabo and proceeding through customs, I noticed a guard with a golden retriever walking around sniffing people’s belongings. I assumed it was a drug-sniffing dog and when it stopped and sat in front of our friend, I naturally began to get nervous. What did she bring with her? Are we going to jail before our vacation starts? The guard asks her if she is carrying any food in her purse and she responds by pulling out a banana peel. He grabs it and puts it in his pouch and I notice the pouch contains many bananas. This wasn’t a drug-sniffing dog, it was a banana-sniffing dog, a banana dog! And so from this funny story, the name was born!
What constitutes a “good” logo and website? Why are they necessary in business today? What does BDM do for the brands they work with, what sets you apart?
I’ll tell you what constitutes a “great” logo. Simplicity! The logo should be clean, easy to understand in relation to the name of the business. Fonts should be minimalistic and easy to read. Colors should work well together and not conflict. If possible, the logo should display some whimsical qualities. In today’s short-attention-span world, people will look at your brand and make a quick impulse. Did your logo manage to capture their attention in the first 8 seconds? If I have to squint or decipher what your business does, you lost me! BananaDog Media focuses on flat, yet elegant, design. We often let the font and colors speak to the branding of our clients.
Website and logo design is a creative and personal expression of a company, much like the work we do in clients’ homes and businesses. How do you come up with concepts? How do you stay authentic to the brand you’re working with while incorporating your creative genius? Is there a process you go through with your clients to hone in on their aesthetic?
We start a consultation by finding out the passion behind their business. Everyone has a desire that turned to dream that turned to reality and this journey creates a unique story that speaks about the brand. We want to know the story so we can tell it with a clever and beautiful website and logo design. When a user goes to a website, we want them to immediately experience and feel the passion behind the business. This translates into a client and business relationship.
Where do you gather inspiration for your designs?
Our inspiration comes from a constant research of latest design and coding trends. Our motto is quite simple… Every Pixel Counts! We deliver you an eye-catching experience for an affordable price because beautiful should not cost more! We often look at the innovation that comes from large budget studios and asks “how can we deliver a similar result to our customers without having them break the bank?”
Tell us about some of your favorite projects, why do they rank at the top of your list?
Some of our favorite projects are the ones that challenge us technically and involve an industry unfamiliar to us. This gives us an opportunity to learn about new industries that we would have normally not known anything about. The technical challenges keep us on our toes and up to date on current coding techniques.
Your portfolio is very impressive- both creatively and technically; from interior design blogs (such as allporju.com!) to industrial factories and medical service-based sites with complex user interfaces. How does your brain go from left to right and then back again? Do you enjoy one aspect over another?
One day at a time! We project manage in sections where we will synergistically work on creative and technical aspects. The technical side is very exciting. We get to implement coding techniques that are new and revolutionary to the industry. For example, parallax scrolling was in its infancy when we built the first version allporju.com. I would say it was probably 1 of 20 sites in the world that implemented this technology, now almost every new website has this feature. The creative side allows us to connect with the client. It tells us about their passion, their product or service, their vision and their accomplishments.
We see that you recently received an award, CONGRATS!! Can you tell us about it?
We were pleasantly surprised and very honored to be recognized for our efforts during the Las Vegas Digital Media Awards ceremony in December of 2015. We took 1st place for “Best Company Website” with over 100 entries. Who took 2nd place? MGM Resorts! Yes, we beat out a corporate staple of the Las Vegas community and we are very humbled by it.
In our line of work, it’s important to create environments that dictate a certain action. We’re always curious to find out from our CFI guests what their ideal set up is for comfort, creativity and functionality. What kind of space encourages your highest productivity?
Balance. It’s very simple. A balance of mind, body and spirit create a true space for productivity. One cannot sit and stare at a computer screen 24/7. But when we do sit, our space has to be clutter free (almost like a blank canvas), large screen viewing, and very organic and comfortable. Some people work best in silence, but we encourage music to be playing all the time. Whether ambient nature sounds in the office or an EDM experience in the headphones, our creativity is spawned through music.
